Welcome to the Waffle Bucket, one of the new formats I am introducing over the next few weeks as I freshen up the site. Yeah yeah I know I’ve said this a few times now. But I mean it this time. Really 👀
The Waffle Bucket will be a dumping ground for off the cuff thoughts, hot takes, rants, immediate post watch thoughts etc etc.
And as such, I just got out of Supergirl. I’ll say this, I enjoyed it more than James Gunns Superman by James Gunn 😅 Though I will admit after seeing this I now have a theory about what Gunn is trying to do with his DC Studios and if I’m right I don’t like it. But that’s something to be discussed elsewhere, possibly in a Side Notes.
Milly Alcock was great. I loved her in House of the Dragon and thought the show lost something, a spark, when they aged the characters up and recast Rhaenyra. She brought a wonderful balance between the melancholy, the anger, and the emotional complexity that defines Kara. That was something Melissa Benoist’s tv Supergirl often lacked. Complexity.
On the flip side, there isn’t much else to say about the film 😪. Shit writing, non-existent plot, no emotional connection, no tension despite the plot being on a three day count down timer 🙄. If this is the level of script that James Gunn is giving the 🟢 to, then the DCU has some serious issues going forward.
It’s no secret I was NOT a fan of his Superman film. However, I’m not one of these Snyder fan boys crying out for the restoration of the Snyderverse. It had its own serious storytelling flaws. But at least it had several things that James Gunns DCU is lacking thus far: identity, tone, emotional weight, gravitas, worldbuilding. Not everything has to be undercut by a joke or underscored by a random pop song.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on Supergirl. Full review coming during the week after I let this sink in for a day or two.
A missed opportunity in my book 🤷🏻♂️
